Ganesh Chaturthi celebration at Babagrama

On September 14th some of the college boys at Bapagrama celebrated Ganesh Chaturthi. They decorated a Ganesha statue with flower garlands,  smudged it with orange and red powders, said some prayers, burned incense, and fed us all sweet rice on banana leaves. After the ceremony at the little temple at Bapagrama, they had a grand time covering themselves and each other with the orange and red powders and dancing. Then they carried Ganesha to a  nearby lake where it is the custom to throw the idols into the water. I have been assured that the statues are made out of a clay that is water-soluble (and hopefully not too toxic!).
